Heroes of the Future

Director and screenwriter: A. Krug-Metzinger doc. film, 52 Min., Radio Bremen / ARTE 2015

Fifty years from now, how will we look back on the present? How will our descendants judge our actions from afar? The film, Heroes of the Future, takes place in the year 2065 and glances back on our present times. From her virtual library of the future, the singer, Emaline Delapaix, as the Europa, opens up a breath-taking view of our planet and her current inhabitants. Europa casts her glance on financial crises, resource shortages, civil wars and a surge in immigration; the end of the old world order looms before an unprecedented backdrop of immense natural disasters.

Europa also sees, however, young men and women trying to change course: Heroes of the Future, far from an abstract image, focuses on a very concrete future, one on which these young men and women seek to exert their influence. From Carrot Mobs to Repair Cafés to internet campaigns and video art, they protest the excesses of a society focused on growth economics. They fight against poverty, corruption and the disdain for human rights. The resistance of these young activists is intelligent, undogmatic, colourful and creative; their actions quite possibly more democratic and more effective than those of the United Nations.

While cumbersome political debates slowly bring about new laws, these young people have mobilized tens of thousands to exert their influence on international issues, which require urgent attention. Cooperation is the lever by which they politically launch their ideas. With an unusual approach, by m eans of video art, young activists procure an audience for immigrants and refugees – ultimately gaining attention in the Swedish parliament.

In a futuristic setting—accompanied by Europa’s soulful intonations—we experience the contagious optimism and vitality of the Heroes of the Future, or Heroes of the Future. This film emboldens us to close the gaps between the world we live in and a world we would like to inhabit.
